Last night in Balasore, Odisha, a terrible three-train crash left at least 238 people dead and more than 650 wounded.
The incident happened when the Yesvantpur-Howrah Superfast collided with the derailed coaches and the Coromandel Shalimar Express, a passenger train, derailed and collided with a cargo train.

The death toll is probably going to go up, and many people are thought to be trapped in the debris.

Amitabh Sharma, executive director of Indian Railways, told AFP that “two passenger trains had an active involvement in the accident while the third train, a goods train, which was parked at the site, also got (involved) in the accident.”

Around seven o’clock in the evening, when most people were asleep, one of the deadliest train accidents occurred.

According to reports, the Coromandel Shalimar Express, which was travelling to Chennai, derailed, struck a goods train, and several coaches overturned as a result.

The derailed carriages and the Yesvantpur-Howrah Superfast then collided. The collisions occurred when both trains were travelling quickly.

Officials and witnesses agree that the terrible catastrophe occurred between 6.50 and 7.10 p.m. in a matter of minutes.

A review has been requested by the Railways amid concerns over a potential operational failure.

Overnight, rescue efforts continued as professionals and locals worked to extricate remains and survivors from the twisted wreckage.

Images from the scene of the collision showed twisted train rails and busted train coaches.
