1945,

A U.S. B-29 Superfortress with the codename Bockscar dropped a nuclear warhead (known as “Fat Man”) over Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, three days after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, Japan, killing an estimated 74,000 people.

1974,

On August 9, 1974, when Nixon announced his resignation, Ford automatically became president and took the oath of office in the East Room of the White House. He was the first and only individual to hold the position of nation’s chief executive without first winning the presidency or vice presidency.

1988,

Wayne Gretzky, a centre for the Edmonton Oilers, is dealt to the Los Angeles Kings on August 9, 1988, along with Mike Krushelnyski and Marty McSorley, for Martin Gelinas, Jimmy Carson, and first-round draught picks in the 1989, 1991, and 1993 draughts. At just 27 years old, Gretzky was already regarded as the best player in hockey history and held 43 scoring records for the National Hockey League.

2011,

After an independence referendum was successful, the nation of South Sudan, officially known as the Republic of South Sudan, peacefully separated from Sudan. However, since gaining its independence, the nation has been torn apart by extensive racial conflict and human rights abuses.
