A former constable from Madhya Pradesh has been discovered with assets worth ₹7.98 crore, including ₹2.87 crore in cash and 234 kilograms of silver, according to a senior Lokayukta Police official. These assets were seized following searches at the residence and office of ex-constable Saurabh Sharma on December 18 and 19, as per an announcement on Monday.
Lokayukta Police Director General Jaideep Prasad revealed that Sharma’s father, RK Sharma, was a government doctor who passed away in 2015. Saurabh Sharma was then appointed as a constable in the state transport department on compassionate grounds the same year and took voluntary retirement in 2023.
The former constable allegedly used money acquired through corrupt means to accumulate vast assets, which included establishing a school and a hotel in the names of his mother, wife, sister-in-law, and close associates, Chetan Singh Gaud and Sharad Jaiswal.
Searches at Sharma’s residence in Arera Colony’s E-7 Sector uncovered ₹1.15 crore in cash (including foreign currency), ₹50 lakh worth of jewelry, and other valuables, including vehicles, totaling ₹2.21 crore. Additional searches at his office in the same area revealed ₹1.72 crore in cash, 234 kg of silver worth ₹2.10 crore, and other assets valued at ₹3 crore, bringing the total moveable assets recovered so far to ₹7.98 crore.
Summons have been issued to Sharma, his wife, mother, and associates Gaud and Jaiswal for questioning, officials stated. Meanwhile, the Income Tax department has also seized cash and gold from Gaud. Bank account details and land documents discovered during the searches are under examination.
In a separate operation on December 19, the I-T department seized over ₹10 crore in cash and more than 50 kilograms of gold from Gaud’s car on the outskirts of Bhopal.
