Live stream of the 2025 Parliament Budget Session: In the midst of ongoing opposition demonstrations, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday about the repatriation of “illegal” Indian migrants from the US, stating that it is a “standard procedure.”
Live Parliamentary Budget Session: Speaking to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar described the expulsion of Indian nationals who are reportedly living in the United States illegally as a “standard procedure” by the nation. “Of course, we are in discussions with the US government to make sure that the deported individuals are not mistreated in any way while they are in flight,” Jaishankar stated.
“At the same time, the House should understand that our focus must be on a strong crackdown on the illegal migration industry, while also taking steps to facilitate visas for legitimate travelers,” he continued.
Deportation is not a novel practice, the minister explained.
“The use of restraints is part of the regular operating procedure for deportation by aircraft. But women and children aren’t restrained, we’ve been told,” he remarked.
Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla asked opposition MPs to refrain from “planned disruptions” that might impede the House’s efficient operation.
“The government is handling your issue. The Ministry of External Affairs is in charge of this. This topic relates to a different nation. It has been taken into consideration by the government. I ask that you refrain from using deliberate disruptions to stop the House from operating smoothly. The Speaker of the Lok Sabha stated, “Question Hour is a crucial session where members present the issues of the people and the government responds to them.”
Congress MPs KC Venugopal, Gaurav Gogoi, and Manickam Tagore filed adjournment requests to address the US government’s deportation of more than 100 Indian nationals.
The expulsion of over 100 Indian nationals is the matter at hand. On Wednesday, a US Air Force aircraft carrying Indian nationals who are suspected of having entered the country illegally touched down in Amritsar, Punjab.
What plans do you have for today?
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will respond to the Rajya Sabha’s debate on President Droupadi Murmu’s speech. Question Hour kicked off today’s Lok Sabha session, and then various ministries placed Parliamentary Papers on the table.
- In order to examine the deportation of more than 100 Indian nationals by the US government, which he described as “carried out under conditions that are deeply distressing and humiliating,” Gaurav Gogoi, the deputy leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, filed an adjournment request.
An adjournment motion has also been presented by Manickam Tagore, the Congress whip in the Lok Sabha, to address the “inhumane deportation of Indian Nationals by the United States…and take all necessary steps to prevent the humiliation and mistreatment of Indian nationals abroad.”
- In the meanwhile, a new income tax bill is anticipated to be submitted in Parliament today, replacing the Income Tax Act of 1961.
The opposition criticizes the government’s deportation quiet.
A number of opposition Members of Parliament questioned the way the government handled Indians who were deported from the United States and criticized it for their treatment.
In the first wave of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, 104 undocumented Indian immigrants were deported when a US military plane transporting them landed in Amritsar on Wednesday.
According to the deportees, they were handcuffed the entire way and only unchained when they got to the airport in Amritsar.
Opposition MPs staged a protest in Parliament against the treatment by US authorities, including Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and SP leader Akhilesh Yadav. A few of the leaders took part while handcuffed.
