On Wednesday, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader N Chandrababu Naidu took the oath of office as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, inaugurating his fourth term in that role. His incarceration in a money laundering case occurred only months prior to this incredible political comeback. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and well-known celebrities Rajinikanth and Chiranjeevi were among the prominent politicians present at the swearing-in event in Vijayawada.
Although Naidu’s detention was connected to a purported skill development fraud, he successfully led the TDP to a landslide victory in the state assembly elections after being released on bond. This was a crucial victory for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Andhra Pradesh, as the TDP, along with the BJP and Jana Sena Party, won handily.
At the event, Pawan Kalyan, popularly known as “Power Star,” the leader of the Jana Sena Party, also took an oath to become a Cabinet Minister. Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh was among the twenty-three individuals sworn in with Kalyan. Satya Kumar Yadav was designated as the only BJP leader in the Andhra Pradesh Cabinet, while the Jana Sena was given three Cabinet slots. There was a noticeable presence of the TDP and its supporters in the state assembly, which has 26 ministries including the Chief Minister.
The NDA won 164 out of 175 seats in the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections in 2024, handily defeating the opposition. The BJP garnered eight seats, Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena gained 21, while the TDP alone won 135 seats. With just 11 seats, the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) lost a great deal of its power.
Tuesday’s conference saw the Telugu Desam Legislature Party and its allies formally pick Naidu to head them. Speaking to the lawmakers, Naidu underlined his desire to see Amaravati become Andhra Pradesh’s only capital. In this remark, he emphasized his commitment to the advancement of the state and the strategic direction he plans to follow while serving as governor.
