Chaos erupted at today’s general house meeting of the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation as Congress and BJP councillors clashed over the legacy of Dr. BR Ambedkar. Anil Masih, the poll officer involved in tampering with the ballot papers in the Chandigarh mayoral elections, targeted the Congress and accused Rahul Gandhi of being out on bail, referencing the National Herald case. This sparked a heated argument among Congress, AAP, and BJP members, escalating into a physical brawl.

Congress and AAP councillors passed a motion demanding the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, while BJP councillors hit back by accusing Congress of disrespecting Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy, especially during the tenure of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.

The BJP further claimed that Congress was trying to undermine Mr. Shah’s reputation by selectively quoting his recent speech in the Rajya Sabha.

The BJP launched a strong attack on Congress, accusing it of orchestrating a “smear campaign” against Mr. Shah. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad led the charge, criticizing Congress for “drama” and “hypocrisy” in using Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy for political advantage. “Congress, which disrespected BR Ambedkar during his lifetime, is now pretending to honor him. This hypocrisy must end,” Prasad said during a press conference at the BJP headquarters.

In retaliation, Congress announced a week-long nationwide initiative, “Ambedkar Samman Saptah,” to celebrate Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions. Party leaders and members are holding marches and press conferences to highlight his legacy while demanding accountability for Mr. Shah’s recent remarks
