Former special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam will run in the Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket. The Padma Shri awardee was linked to numerous high-profile incidents, including the 1993 bombings and the 26/11 Mumbai terror assault. Nikam will face off against Congress politician Varsha Gaikwad in the Mumbai North Central seat.

“I don’t think politics is a struggle. Political action can be used to provide social services. Politics is another way to serve the country. I will implement this new funda. I have been given the chance to serve the nation through politics. So I consider myself fortunate. Nikam spoke.

According to a note released by the saffron party on Saturday, two-time MP Poonam Mahajan would not run in the elections from her present constituency, a decision based on organisational feedback. Mahajan previously won the Mumbai North Central seat in 2014, running against incumbent MP Priya Dutt, the daughter of the late actor and Congress politician Sunil Dutt. She replicated her electoral triumph in 2019.

“It is a great time for all of us that Ujjwal Nikam will now speak out in Parliament about his battle against terrorism and work with us to achieve Prime Minister Modi’s objective of removing terrorism from its roots. Poonam Mahajan is our sister. Whatever party decides for us and assigns the duty, we do so with complete honesty,” said Union Minister Piyush Goyal.
