At Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport, customs officers on Friday made the “biggest ever” seizure of foreign currency from three citizens of Tajikistan, totaling over 10 crore.

According to reports, the foreign currency was hidden within shoes kept in the suitcase.

The suspects were stopped by the authorities as they tried to board a plane for Istanbul.

According to a statement made by the customs agency, a thorough inspection of their luggage led to the seizure of foreign currency (USD 7,20,000 and Euro 4,66,200) worth 10.6 Crore from them.

It further stated that additional inquiry was ongoing as the foreign currency was seized.

According to the customs department, this is the largest incidence of foreign currency smuggling via an airport in India.

A senior customs official confirmed to news outlet PTI that one of the three was a minor.
