Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy and his wife Sudha Murthy have secured the fifth position on Bengaluru’s richest families list, as per the recently published Hurun India Rich List 2024. While Narayana Murthy is often the first name that comes to mind when we think of Infosys, it’s worth noting that the IT giant was co-founded by him alongside six other individuals. Interestingly, Narayana Murthy is not the wealthiest among the Infosys founders.

According to the Hurun India Rich List 2024, Narayana and Sudha Murty have a net worth of ₹36,600 crore, placing them fifth among Bengaluru’s wealthiest. However, it is his co-founder, Senapathy ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan, who surpasses him, boasting a fortune of ₹38,500 crore.

Kris Gopalakrishnan, who served as Infosys’ CEO and Managing Director from 2007 to 2011, and later as Vice Chairman from 2011 to 2014, retired from the company in 2014. Post-retirement, he has invested in numerous startups, including Ki Mobility, through his business incubator Axilor Ventures, as well as other venture funds. Currently, at 69, he is the Chairman of Axilor Ventures, a startup accelerator that has backed ventures such as GoodHome, Kaagaz, and EnKash.

Gopalakrishnan holds a master’s degree in physics and computer science from IIT Madras. In 2011, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honor. Additionally, he has funded the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Research Center, named after his wife, at IIT Madras.

He serves on the Board of Governors for both IIT Madras and IIM Bangalore and is the Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIIT Bangalore. He also sits on the Board of Trustees of the Chennai Mathematical Institute, according to Infosys’ official site.

Infosys, founded in July 1981 in Pune and now headquartered in Bengaluru, was the brainchild of seven engineers: Narayana Murthy, Nandan Nilekani, Kris Gopalakrishnan, SD Shibulal, K Dinesh, NS Raghavan, and Ashok Arora.
