Ten Patients Dead After Major Fire at SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack

A tragic fire at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, Odisha, claimed the lives of 10 patients early Monday morning, while 11 hospital staff members sustained burn injuries during rescue operations.

The fire reportedly broke out in the Trauma Care Intensive Care Unit (ICU) between 2:30 am and 3:00 am, an area where several critically ill patients were undergoing treatment. As soon as the incident was reported, multiple fire engines rushed to the hospital, and emergency teams began rescue and evacuation efforts.

According to officials, the injured hospital staff suffered burns while trying to save patients trapped inside the ICU. In total, 23 patients were shifted to other wards and departments for emergency treatment. However, seven critically ill patients died while being moved to other ICUs and wards, while three others succumbed to their injuries later, taking the death toll to ten.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi visited the hospital shortly after the incident along with Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling to review the situation and meet patients receiving treatment.

Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister confirmed the casualties and said that authorities have been instructed to ensure proper medical care for all injured patients and staff members.

Majhi also announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased. In addition, he ordered a judicial probe to investigate the cause of the fire and determine any lapses in safety measures at the hospital.
