1942

In Mumbai (formerly Bombay), Mahatma Gandhi launched the Quit India Movement on August 8, 1942, in an effort to end British rule.

1967

The establishment of ASEAN. The Foreign Ministers of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand joined together on August 8, 1967, to sign a document in the main hall of the Department of Foreign Affairs building in Bangkok, Thailand.

1945

After receiving no response to the terms of capitulation, an American bomber known as the Enola Gay dropped “Little Boy,” an atomic weapon, on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945. The Soviet Union invaded Manchuria and Sakhalin Island on August 8th after declaring war on Japan.

1974

Faced with damaging new information regarding the Watergate crisis, President Richard Nixon announced his resignation the following day on August 8, 1974.

1963

The “Great Train Robbery” in Britain, which resulted in the theft of 2.6 million pounds in banknotes, occurred on August 8, 1963.

1975

With the publication of Wallace Smith Broecker’s article “Climatic Change: Are We on the Brink of a Pronounced Global Warming?” in the journal Science on August 8, 1975, the phrase “global warming” makes its first appearance in print.
