Manchester City held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League Semifinals on Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu. Kevin De Bruyne’s goal in the second half offset Vinicius Junior’s first-half score, leaving the tie evenly poised going into next Wednesday’s second leg at the Etihad.

Thibaut Courtois denied De Bruyne and Rodri in the opening period as City took the game to Real Madrid with their directness and potency. Vinicius gave the Whites the lead in the 36th minute with a spectacular long-range goal that gave Ederson no chance.

The hosts appeared to be bound for another victory after defeating City 3-1 in the previous meeting, but De Bruyne scored an impressive goal for the visitors midway through the second half to tie the score.

Late in the game, Aurelien Tchouameni nearly gave Real Madrid a 2-1 lead with another incredible shot, but Ederson deflected it away and the score remained level.

There was a ruckus on the touchline when Ancelotti and the Madrid staff argued with the referees as the City players were celebrating.

It was unclear at the time why the Madrid manager was acting so animatedly when he was given a yellow card.

“The ball was off the pitch,” he said after the game. I don’t understand why the VAR didn’t verify what the technology claimed.

“The referee didn’t pay much attention to many things tonight.”
