The once-cheap tomatoes are now selling for opulent prices up north, fetching 250 rupees per kilogramme in Gangotri Dham and 180–200 rupees per kilogramme in Uttarkashi district.
According to a vegetable vendor, tomatoes have suddenly increased in price in the area.

“The majority of the cost of the increased tomato prices in Uttarakashi is being borne by consumers. Even the willingness to purchase them is lacking. Tomatoes are selling for between 200 and 250 rupees per kilogramme in Gangotri and Yamunotri, a vegetable vendor named Rakesh said ANI.

Many people blamed the ongoing heatwave in important tomato-growing regions as well as heavy rains, which caused a disturbance in supply lines, for the dramatic increase in vegetable costs.

Additionally, tomatoes have a relatively short shelf life, which is thought to be influencing tomato pricing.

Tomatoes are currently going for between 100 and 130 rupees per kg in Chennai.

In an effort to provide some relief to customers amid the price spiral, the Tamil Nadu government started selling tomatoes at a discounted rate of 60 rupees per kg in ration shops in the state capital Chennai.

Similar to many other states, Karnataka has recently witnessed skyrocketing tomato prices.

In Bengaluru, tomatoes cost between 101 and 121 per kilogramme. The abrupt temperature rise in March and April is blamed for the high pricing because pest assaults on tomatoes led to higher market rates.
