Four of the seven patients who passed away late last night at the government hospital in Nanded, Maharashtra, earned national news yesterday after there were 24 deaths in 24 hours there.

The Shankarrao Chavan Government Hospital now has 31 fatalities in the last 48 hours. 16 of the 31 cases were babies or young children.

The hospital’s dean, Dr. Shyamrao Wakode, has denied accusations of medical malpractice. He has emphasised that the patients did not respond to treatment despite receiving competent care and that there was no shortage of medications or physicians.

A commission has reportedly been established to look into the killings, according to a senior government official in Maharashtra. “A three-person expert committee from the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district has been established, and it has been given the task of submitting a report by tomorrow at 1 pm. Director of Medical Education and Research Dr. Dilip Mhaisekar said yesterday: “I am personally visiting the hospital to assess the situation.

The opposition has launched a savage attack on the Eknath Shinde-led state administration in response to the deaths at the public hospital.

Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress, has demanded a thorough investigation, describing the situation as “extremely painful, serious, and worrying.” Mr. Kharge also mentioned a comparable tragedy that occurred in August at a government hospital in Thane, where 18 people perished suddenly.

Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, took aim at the BJP, which is a member of the Maharashtra government. He said on X, “The BJP government spends thousands of crores on publicity, but there is no money to buy medicines for children?”

Former Chief Minister and leader of the Maharashtra Congress, Ashok Chavan, has argued that the Eknath Shinde administration should take up the issue and offer the Nanded hospital immediate assistance.
